As summer begins to fade and the days gradually become cooler, autumn is almost here. It’s a beautiful time of year, bringing rich colours, crisp mornings and a fresh opportunity to prepare your garden for the months ahead.

At Shergill Design, we believe that autumn is one of the most important seasons for garden maintenance and landscaping. A little preparation now can help keep your outdoor space healthy, tidy and looking its best throughout autumn and into winter.

Prepare Your Lawn for Autumn

After a long summer, your lawn may be showing signs of stress from heat, foot traffic and dry conditions. Autumn is the perfect time to give it some attention.

Consider scarifying or aerating compacted areas, removing excess thatch and applying an appropriate autumn lawn feed. Regular mowing is still important while the grass continues to grow, although you can gradually raise the cutting height as the weather gets cooler.

A healthy lawn going into winter will be better prepared to recover when spring arrives.

Give Your Plants and Borders Some Attention

Autumn is a great opportunity to tidy up garden borders and remove dead, damaged or unwanted growth. Clearing away spent annuals and fallen debris can make your garden look instantly neater while helping to maintain healthier planting areas.

It’s also an excellent time to consider adding new plants, shrubs or trees to your garden. With cooler temperatures and generally wetter conditions, many plants can establish their roots before the growing season begins again.

Keep on Top of Fallen Leaves

The changing colours of autumn are beautiful, but fallen leaves can quickly cover lawns, patios, paths and planting areas.

Regular leaf clearance helps keep your garden looking neat and prevents thick layers of leaves from blocking light and air from reaching your lawn. Wet leaves can also become slippery on paths and patios, so keeping hard surfaces clear is particularly important.

Why not make the most of the season by turning garden waste into useful compost where possible?

Think About Your Garden's Structure

As many plants lose their leaves, the underlying structure of your garden becomes more visible. This makes autumn a useful time to look at the bigger picture.

Could your garden benefit from a new patio, pathway, retaining wall, planting area or improved lawn? Are there areas that feel underused or difficult to maintain?

Autumn can be a great time to plan landscaping improvements so you can make changes before the next growing season.

Don't Forget Your Trees and Hedges

Trees and hedges can require attention as autumn approaches. Removing dead or damaged branches and keeping hedges maintained can help keep your garden looking tidy.

Larger trees should always be assessed carefully, particularly if branches are damaged or overhanging buildings, paths or other structures. For larger or potentially hazardous work, professional advice is recommended.
